Struggling with a complicated user interface problem? Looking for a way out of the box? Or are you just trying to expand your horizon?

Here’s a couple of resources that should provide you with enough to chew on for at least the first half of 2008.

Pattern libraries

Design patterns are solutions for common functionalities in graphical user interfaces. These pattern liraries are for those among us that don’t have time to reinvent the wheel.

Flickr image collection

    This site offers a good selection of free high-resolution stock photography images. The site includes a search engine so you can quickly find what you need. All images are in JPG format and new content is added here on a regular basis.

    Are you looking for free photo images? This site offers a nice collection of public domain photos. Categories include animals, buildings, nature, and more.

    This site offers a good selection of free original stock photos. Here, you’ll also find textures, wallpapers, fractals, Bryce mats, and more. The images here are intended for non-commercial, personal usage.

  • Freetoall.info
    This site offers two excellent freeware programs. Wallpaper Desktop lets you generate colorful, original patterns for your desktop. A second program here, Grabzilla, lets you easily capture screenshots from your desktop. (For Windows).

  • Meazure
    Have you ever needed to know the dimensions of a window on your screen, or the size of an image? Meazure is a useful freeware screen measurement, magnification and capture tool. It’s easy to use and offers loads of features. (For Windows).

  • IrfanView
    (Note: this site is occasionally inaccessible). One of the handiest freeware programs around, this multimedia and graphics viewer can handle any type of file you throw at it: from GIFs to Real Audio to MP3 to Adobe Photoshop files, as well as a lot of obscure formats. (For Windows).

  • Alice
    Are you interested in 3D graphics, but find the whole process too involved and complicated for a novice? Then check out Alice. It’s a free 3D “Interactive Graphics Programming Environment.” Alice can be used for creating many types of applications, including interactive games, animations and virtual reality environments. It has a moderately steep learning curve. Basically, if you’ve messed around with BASIC before or built a spreadsheet, you can handle Alice. (For Windows).

  • POV-Ray
    POV-Ray (the Persistence of Vision Raytracer) is a high-quality, free program for creating sophisticated 3-D graphics. Has a steep learning curve, but is worth the time you invest in it, if you’re serious about learning about ray-traced graphics. Available for Windows, DOS, Mac and Linux.

  • ShoeString PictureDicer
    This is a freeware tool that chops any image file into several smaller images, suitable for creating mouseover effects and pseudo-imagemaps on Web pages. It also generates the HTML for a table to contain the partial images and display them so they appear as the original uncut image. (For Windows).

  • Icon Viewer
    The only freeware program of its kind, this handy utility lets you view all of the icons on your computer that are contained in an EXE, DLL, ICO or ICL file. You can also compare icon files to determine whether they’re identical or not, and search a directory for duplicates of an icon. (For Windows).

Unlike many font collections on the Web, here you’ll find links to the sites where each font originated.

  • FontFace.com
    This is an essential site for anyone in search of the latest and greatest free fonts on the Web.   • Fontasy.de
    Tilman Schalmey’s fast-growing resource serves up over 1,600 free fonts, arranged alphabetically. The site offers a solid selection of fonts that we haven’t seen elsewhere. Fontasy.de is offered in both the English and German languages.

  • High Fonts
    A well-designed free fonts site that offers over 3,000 selections. Fonts are organized alphabetically and you may preview each selection before downloading it. The site also offers a roundup of programs that let you create your own fonts.

  • Urban Fonts
    This site offers a good, searchable roundup of free fonts and dingbats for PC and Mac. Here, you’ll find over 8,000 fonts, sorted alphabetically. The site also includes a helpful FAQ to answer your font-related questions.

  • Car Fonts
    At this site, you’ll find a nice selection of car-related free fonts, sorted alphabetically. The fonts are in ZIP compressed format, for faster download.

  • Font Maniac
    Are you looking for free fonts? This uncluttered, easy-to-navigate site offers a nice and stylistically diverse collection of free fonts, sorted alphabetically.

  • 1-800-fonts.com
    This regularly-updated site offers a big roundup of free fonts in TrueType (.ttf) format. Fonts here are sorted alphabetically. You can preview each font and download the ones you want in ZIP compressed format.

  • Jabroo.com
    Here, you’ll find over 16,000 free fonts, as well as an online custom graphics generator. You can search for fonts by category here and you can bookmark specific fonts to download later. The site is free of the pop-up ads that clutter many font sites these days.

    At this site, you’ll find hundreds of free fonts, sorted alphabetically. You can preview each font via a thumbnail image. Fonts are available for both Windows and the Mac. New fonts are added here regularly.

    A solid, uncluttered free fonts resource, this site features an excellent search engine to help you find the font style you’re looking for, quickly.

    At this site, you’ll find over 2,200 freeware TrueType fonts, sorted into eight categories. There is also a handy search engine to help you find the specific font you’re looking for.

  • 007Fonts & Logos
    Here, you’ll find a solid, alphabetized roundup of several hundred fonts. Not all of the fonts here are free (some are shareware, but they’re clearly marked as such). There’s a nifty free instant logo generator here that lets you create custom images, using any font.

  • TypeNow.net
    An extensive resource, TypeNow.net serves up over 5,000 free fonts and dingbats for both Windows and Mac. There are also fonts here from non-Western languages, including Japanese, Indian, Russian and Arabic, as well as a handy glossary and FAQ.

  • EKNP.com
    This site offers a good roundup of free fonts, sorted alphabetically. There are also categories here that include fonts in various styles, including 3D, alien, computer, decorative, futuristic, handwriting, horror, retro, and more.

  • iqAuto.com
    Here’s a free online 3D text generator that lets you easily create cool, custom graphics. Just type in the text you want and specify the options, which range from font texture to depth of text and within minutes, you’ll be able to view your graphic.

  • Blue Vinyl Free Fonts
    This elegantly designed, well-organized free fonts site manages to do everything right. There’s a broad selection of TrueType fonts, listed by category and you can preview each font before downloading a fast-loading ZIP version. Blue Vinyl also offers a helpful mailing list to keep you on top of what’s happening in the world of fonts. Categories here include Deco Cafe, Rock Star, Gothic, Modular 2000, Cyber Phonic, Grrlz Stuff, Retrobats, etc.

  • Fonts For Flash
    This site offers a small selection of free, original pixel fonts, suitable for use in Macromedia Flash. To access the free fonts, click the “Freebies” link on the left side of the page.

  • FontLoader
    This nifty freeware utility makes it easy to work with fonts on your computer. FontLoader offers a shell context menu extension that lets you load and install fonts by right-clicking on a font file or a folder containing fonts. Note: FontLoader does not support PostScript fonts, it works with TrueType fonts only. (For Windows).

  • Divide By Zero
    A welcome addition to the Web’s free font resources, Divide By Zero serves up a eye-catching collection of original TrueType fonts. They’re free to use, but may not be resold (as part of a collection on CD, for example). Webmaster Tom Murphy doesn’t beat around the bush on this site; he gets straight to the fonts on the main page. Each font is annotated with interesting commentary about its creation and suggestions for use. For those in a hurry, you can get all the fonts in a convenient ZIP file.

  • Font Mania
    This nicely-designed resource offers over 400 free Windows TrueType fonts, conveniently organized. There’s a “Top 10″ listing and an archive of past favorites. A good collection, with many fonts that we’ve not seen elsewhere. This site offers a message board for you to place requests on. There are also helpful tips and tricks on using fonts.

  • FontLister
    If you have a bunch of fonts scattered across your hard drive, then you need this free essential utility. FontLister allows you to quickly view, browse, print, and work with your fonts. FontLister’s latest version is shareware, but you can still get Version 2, which is freeware. (For Windows).
